In 2013, the State of New Mexico passed a Community Schools Act to help improve student learning and facilitate stronger families and healthier communities.
Here in Las Cruces, the Lynn Middle School was chosen as the first Community School which brought in an array of new services and programs to students and families, including food distribution, a variety of after-school programs, and the development of a family resource center.
Four additional community schools were added in 2021. CdP added a significant contribution to the community schools’ mission — a healthy snack bar featuring items like granola bars, breakfast bars, mixed nuts and fruits, fresh fruit, fresh vegetables and peanut butter.
The Healthy Snack Bars are open every day after the 4th period: in the middle of the afternoon when hunger is most likely to distract children from learning.
