Feeding the Hungry

Casa de Peregrinos (Casa), a food pantry in Las Cruces, New Mexico, serves not only Las Cruces but also much of Doña Ana County. Here, tough times tend to strike both often and hard. Right now, for example, nearly one-quarter of our residents live below poverty level. In rural colonias they're actually living far below, with family incomes averaging $5,000 per year.

Imagine trying to feed, house, and clothe yourself—or a family!—on that amount of money. So, people in such circumstances often turn to Casa for help. And we've been providing that help to hungry people since the early 1979.

Our Program

Currently, Casa's emergency food program operates through three projects: Food Security, Summer Food, and the Rural Initiative.   Click here for access   to all of Casa's project descriptions.

womancarl.jpgOur main pantry, in Las Cruces, operates Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. On those days, both morning and afternoon, people in need can obtain groceries and, sometimes, referrals to complementary agencies.

A helpful feature for many clients is our proximity to other service providers on the Community of Hope campus. Thus, people such as the young woman just above—who lives in her car—can pay a periodic visit to Casa when they come to have a meal at El Caldito or drop by the free clinic, the Community of Hope office, or Jardín de los Niños. These savings of transportation money and/or energy can make all the difference to people in challenging lives.

On their first visit to Casa, prospective clients need to bring a drivers license or some other form of I.D. and also proof of physical address, such as a light bill, rent receipt, etc. We cannot accept P.O. boxes as this proof.

Although it often stretches us financially, Casa de Peregrinos keeps the emergency food program going because poverty and hunger have gained a solid toehold in Southern New Mexico. And we're staying right here until they move on down the road.
