Volunteers and Community Support
How can you help?
As a nonprofit organization, Casa de Peregrinos (Casa) sometimes struggles to attract enough funds and “bodies” to support our mission. So we're always looking for volunteers to lend a hand. Interested yourself? Please call our executive director, Lorenzo Alba (575-523-5542) to discuss Casa's needs and your own skills and interests.
Individual, Group, and Court-Order Volunteering
Nearly always, Casa needs volunteer assistance in these areas, among others:
- Bagging and assembling Casa's standard food packs
- Sorting, weighing, and repackaging donations and bulk items
- Distributing food to clients
- Cleaning of various kinds
- Other duties as assigned
Often, we need help with client interviews. Such interviewing requires detail-oriented volunteers with computer skills, who respect and maintain confidentiality.
Generally, interviews take from 1 to 10 minutes and require that the volunteer speak both English and Spanish with reasonable proficiency. For example, our genial and faithful interviewer Abe (left) is completely bilingual.
Would-be interviewers receive brief training and orientation to help them feel at ease in serving clients; we ask these volunteers to donate at least 2 to 4 hours weekly. In addition to interviewing, we also need volunteers to help with these areas:
- Writing thank-you letters to our donors
- Writing grants
- Updating Microsoft Access
Volunteer hours are Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 8:30am to 12:00pm and 1:00pm to 5:00pm; we close on holidays.
If you're part of a large group that would like to volunteer or need more information on volunteering, please contact us. With a little advance notice, we can put your class or organization right to work helping the hungry of Las Cruces and Doña Ana County.
